French

Key Stage 3

At Brayton Academy, the French curriculum aims to cultivate successful linguists and resilient, culturally aware individuals prepared for a globalised world.

Core Aims:

Develop Proficiency in French: Students will achieve a high standard of competence across all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Foster Resilience in Learning: The curriculum is structured to allow for regular review and embedding of learning, increasing in complexity over time to promote strong progress. Students will be challenged and supported to reach their full potential.

Broaden Cultural Understanding: By exploring the language and cultures of French-speaking countries, students will develop a greater understanding of the world, fostering an appreciation for diversity and different perspectives. This includes exploring customs, traditions, history, and current affairs related to France and the Francophone world.

Promote Lifelong Learning Skills: Students will acquire language learning strategies and skills transferable beyond the French classroom, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication. The curriculum also aims to equip students with the skills and confidence to engage with global issues and communicate effectively in real-world situations.

Raise Aspirations: By mastering a widely spoken global language, students will enhance their career opportunities, facilitate travel, and open doors to further educational opportunities.

Through the French curriculum, students at Brayton Academy will become confident and fluent communicators, embrace the richness of French culture and develop the valuable skills needed to thrive as global citizens.

Key Stage 4

Our KS4 students receive three lessons per week. The GCSE course focusses on developing students’ knowledge covering three specific themes in relation to the current specification from AQA:

Theme 1: People and Lifestyle

Theme 2: Popular Culture

Theme 3: Communication and the world around us

Students will work on a wide range of skills: listening, reading, speaking, translation and writing using authentic materials. They will develop their understanding of the language and be able to develop a skill for life.
